Day 17 of 100 Days of Little Stories.

Strengths - very good at finding little things in life cheerful.
Weaknesses - real lack of patience in relation to letting paint dry properly.

I wish I had paint drying patience but I just don’t and here is an acceptance of that in the form of this tiny little book full of life’s little joys and smudged paintwork.

This little story is the story of what’s kept me cheerful throughout my life. I learnt to look for little things during a rather lengthy trying time as a teenager and developing that skill saw me through some much bigger challenges later on in life, and brings me goodness each day. I’ve noticed that once you start looking for one or two good things you start finding them all over the place.

I’ve been delighted by these tiny little sketchbooks i made using up scraps of favourite fabrics. I will add a few tiny sketchbooks to my shop at mimrobson.com in the next few days - I encourage you to fill them with your own little things!

It says…

Rays of sunlight above the horizon reddening anything the light touches… I sit and watch as the shadow lands.

Not all of the sunsets are as good as this one but at either end of the day you’re in with an alright chance of seeing some good sky and I appreciate that.

I love flickerbooks and have made them since I was a child. They take time but can be scrappy and still work, and there’s something really satisfying about watching your drawings come to life.

Easy and cheap to do, you can do it with a film or radio on, stick men work well, just need a post it note block, pen, some imagination and some patience - give it a go! If you do, please show me your results!

My nephew has a unique, playful and off the wall sort of mind and offers us a lot of laughter and unexpected moments. I have other nephews and nieces and a few good quotes written down from them but this particular nephew was either quite prolific with his gems or he came at a time where I had the mind and organisation to write them down - perhaps a bit of both.

A bit more making. Some things take longer than others and anything involving snipping words out of books takes hours but it’s satisfying too. It’s always surprising when I cut out a short paragraph and am often able to write pretty much all of what I’m trying to write just by rearranging the letters that are already there.

Day 13 of 100 Days of Little Stories.

I have a bunch of A5 Birds of Shame prints so I thought I’d share a couple of them for a better look at Antonio and Barry’s stories.

Antonio the feral pigeon has taught me that a lot of people have a real soft spot for pigeons. I always sell more of Antonio than any of the other birds - and usually to people who either love pigeons themselves or who have a friend who is a fan of them. It was an unexpected discovery but a nice one as as Antonio knows only too well, pigeons can generally be a bit underrated.

Not much more to say about Barry except I love him and his big beak.

Day 11 of 100 Days of Little Stories.

This one is another blackout story from my dictionary. I wrote it last summer when I was working in a garden centre.

It says…

Of late my colleagues keep offering me peas from the pod and today I found a whole pea pod in my pocket… in some special way perhaps I am at a peak of my career’

It was a lovely job in many ways - it was great working outside all the time, and tending to the plants. I spent a lot of time watering, pruning and wandering around some beautiful plants and flowers. I learnt so much with the help of a few really knowledgeable about generous colleagues who insisted that I already know more than I think I do - which is probably true in general. I learnt so many plant names and still try to practice them as I walk past gardens in North Shields. The customers were great too - they pulled plant knowledge out of my brain that I wouldn’t have known was there if they hadn’t asked good questions.

There were things I didn’t love - it was a bit old fashioned in some ways as a workplace, which having worked for myself for a long time tried my patience, but the main thing that was tricky was that there were days and weeks where there were long hours of unutterable boredom. Garden centre activity ebbs and flows with the seasons so autumn and winter can be an unbearable drag at times. I didn’t stay long into autumn and spent the last month or so of my time working there filling my mind with blackout story ideas and plans for creative projects, which I would count down the minutes until I could get home and work on. It was one of the most creatively productive periods I’ve had for a long time.

I find watching these sort of things oddly soothing - hopefully you enjoy them! Gives you a little insight into the making and thought processes I suppose.

I wanted to make a little zine/book and the quickest and easiest way to do that is to fold one from a piece of paper. First time properly rifling through an old Football Monthly magazine and it was full of good stuff.

This was the first reel I made for this Little Stories project and here’s where I learned that you can only do 90 seconds on a reel. I ended up splitting it into two reels, which now seems unnecessary but I made it so I will share it, perhaps a nice long browse of Football Monthly is just what everyone needs. I shall post the incredibly exciting part two of this reel tomorrow, hold on to your trousers folks!!!

Day 6 of 100 Days of Little Stories.

I enjoyed making this. It’s great to finish something that has spent years with the potential of half-done-ness. I think I will make some more along similar lines at some point as The Pilgrim’s Progress is so full of inspiration for something like this.

This one is called Hopeful. I find it helpful - and hopeful - to remember that hope is more resilient and present than we know.

friend
I saw in my dream, you looked down, despair on every side.
so laden with a burden that was written within
in my dream I took your hand,

It took courage to walk again through the darkness

Day 4 of 100 Days of Little Stories. Here’s today’s finished little stories. It was nice to use these tiny frames for the project, I love them. And the tiny leaves I’d collected and pressed. I snipped words out of ladybird books on butterflies and moths, birds, and cub scouts and girl guides to make these tiny stories on the theme of winter.

They’re a couple of thoughts on the nature of a period of winter. A darker, colder, greyer season can feel hard to get through but I like to remind myself during these times that winters are for rest, recovery, healing and for tending to and sending energy deep into our roots, just as the trees do - ready for renewed life and colour later on.

It’s helpful to think of as the nights are drawing in at this time of year, and really during any period of recovery or enforced rest.

Day 4 of 100 Days of Little Stories. My lovely friend John gave me this copy of Mrs Beeton’s Everyday Cookery a few years ago. He had fixed it up so it was holding together better and painted the colours back on the front cover. It’s a beautiful and interesting books with brilliant illustrations, and of course it is special so it’s one of the few books I won’t cut up for projects. But it makes a very good leaf press.

If you’re into making things with leaves and haven’t done it before, put the leaves between the pages of a book and lay a few books on top for a week or two. The leaves will dry out flat that way, rather than curling up.

Anyway I’ve been in search of birch trees around North Shields for the past month and haven’t found any - I found some on local walks though and picked up the smallest I could find.

Adding some little stories to the frames next, not sure what they will consist of but rifling through naturey books for words to tie in with the leaves and the ecoprinted paper.

Day 3 of 100 Days of Little Stories. This one is a blackout poem. Blackout poems are made by getting a page of a book, or magazine, or whatever text, and scanning through it to find words within it that say something new. You highlight them and link them together to make a sentence/story/poem. A couple of years ago I bought a Collins dictionary with a mission to fill every page with blackout poems. The dictionary has a lot of pages and it’s an ongoing project 😂 I think I’ve done around 250 so far. I’m not always sure I think of these as poems - more often than not I see them as very short stories… so I will be sharing a few of these tiny stories throughout this project.

This was one I wrote last November at a turbulent time, during which I found myself in the Lake District, feeling quite unsettled. In attempts to make the best of things I took myself for a walk at Grasmere. I didn’t get particularly far but I stopped at the lakeside for a long time because it was so full of colour. I’ve shared the photos I took from that day in this reel. It was stunning and calming and I think of that moment as a small port in a storm.

As it happens I was in the Lake District yesterday too - almost exactly a year later. We hadn’t planned to go to Grasmere but a few things (primarily fog) led us to make the decision to do a walk from there instead of up one of the fells. Towards the end of the walk I found myself again at the spot I visited last year - only this time feeling well, happy, settled and laughing with friends. It’s a good reminder that things can really turn around if you give them time to.

For those who might find the reel too fast - you can pause it by holding your thumb down when you want it to stop - but here’s what the blackout story says…

‘There is a rainbow of autumn in the water as the fells and the light dye the lake red, yellow, rust, all of the greens and purples’

Day 2 of 100 Days of Little Stories Project. The words on the outside of the pop up say “this is a special place” - and it is! Newcastle and surrounds have been such a treat to discover and get to know better this year. I moved here in January - I’ve had family up here and known the area all my life, but there’s so much to find out and to love about it now I live here. We do get SUN - lots of days there’s sun, if you pay attention… there is beautiful COAST all along through to Scotland… the SOCIETY is fabulous and there are some outstanding BRIDGES too… what more could one want?!

It’s funny how making things in this way can pull thought processes out of your brain unexpectedly - when I work from a magazine or book like this I don’t tend to have any idea what I will end up making, and just look for inspiration in the pages. In old magazines like this there’s no shortage of potential ideas. What I ended up coming up with was actually something I’d been thinking recently - after a summer of too many trips away from home visiting all over the country, I got back home to North Shields in September with a sigh of relief and an increased appreciation of everything that home, and home here in the north east, has to offer. It’s been great to settle again and just enjoy this lovely place.

Day 2 of 100 days of little stories. This was a last minute little story making venture as I was leaving for the Lake District the next morning and hadn’t made a story for whilst I was away - so this all happened at about 11 o clock at night.

I had absolutely no idea what I was going to make but I’d recently re-found this 1957 Amateur Photographer magazine I rescued/scavenged from my grandpa’s house when we were emptying it (there were all sorts of things in there including every Xmas edition of the Radio Times since at least 1960 - a feast!!) and thought I’d see if I got any ideas.

The first word I cut out was HOLIDAYS! - perhaps because I’m going away?! And then lots of words popped out at me that somehow linked with holidays - and I went from there.

Day 2 of 100 days of little stories. This was a last minute little story making venture as I was leaving for the Lake District the next morning and hadn’t made a story for whilst I was away - so this all happened at about 11 o clock at night.

I had absolutely no idea what I was going to make but I’d recently re-found this 1957 Amateur Photographer magazine I rescued/scavenged from my grandpa’s house when we were emptying it (there were all sorts of things in there including every Xmas edition of the Radio Times since at least 1960 - a feast!!) and thought I’d see if I got any ideas.

I’ve been working on a project!

It’s called 100 Days of Little Stories. I will be making and sharing 100 little creative stories in all manner of mediums. Some of the stories are very little, whilst others are just little. I hope you enjoy it!

I was introduced to the #100dayproject by @elenaskoreyko and then reminded of it recently by @lindaharveytextiles - both of whom have done some amazing 100 day projects - go and check them out!

The idea of the 100 day project is that you do something for 100 days in a row on a particular theme. I’ve come to know myself well enough by now that I don’t think I can (or want to) do ANYTHING every day for 100 days in a row, so I’ve adapted the idea of the project to suit me better. I’m going to share 100 days of all kinds of little stories I’ve made - some will be past work and lots will be new work. Some will be for sale and others won’t. I’ve been working on it ahead of time and will just try to share it 100 days in a row (that will be a good challenge in itself!) but there are still LOTS of little stories to make for me to keep on track with the project.

Hopefully it will be interesting to follow for people on the other side of this screen but for me it’s already been great for pushing me to make new work, to actually finish things that have been sat half done for too long, and to tick little projects off my ideas list that have been in the back of my mind for a while (often years!)… and it’s made me learn how to do reels! Which has been fun. I’ve made quite a few reels showing the making process of lots of the projects, as I thought some people might find that interesting, or helpful if you want to have a go at similar things.

After some chaotic times, and lots of years working in community arts I’ve often found it difficult to sit down and focus on making new work of my own - so finding space and time to settle into this has been brilliant and I look forward (with some apprehension) to sharing (and finishing) this project with you all!
